In general, most small businesses can not afford the luxury of an in-house IT staff to perform software updates, maintain computer networks and apply critical security patches. This presents an inviting target to hackers.

Small business computer systems are particularly vulnerable to unauthorized access since they contain valuable, sensitive financial data. Statistics show an overwhelming majority of large corporations and governmental agencies detected computer security breaches within the last twelve months.

But that’s large businesses,
why should a small business or home based business be concerned? At a recent seminar, I learned the story of a small business owner that left his laptop in a rental car at the airport. An inopportune cell phone call from an important client, rushing to the airport – an oversight anyone of us could make. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a Good Samaritan in this story (or even a logon password.) The laptop contained confidential client information, credit billing information, names, addresses, social security numbers, and worse passwords to his online banking and stock brokerage accounts. I will let you finish the story in your mind… it pains me to even thing about it.

What should have been a minor financial loss of a cheap laptop computer almost resulted in bankruptcy. In discussing computer security with small businesses owners, I have noticed a distinct trend; Computer security equals firewalls or anti-virus protection. Necessary protection indeed but owners tend to get a little skittish when you start asking about passwords, encryption, data back-up, physical security controls or that critical financial data often resides on employees (
never up-dated) home computers.

Native Technology, Inc. specializes in serving the technology needs of businesses that generally do not require nor can afford a full time information technology staff. We can assist you with the normal IT functions like firewalls, anti-virus, access controls, etc. and provide a review of office security procedures. In addition, we offer small business computer maintenance services.
